LES GORGES DU VERDON
AVAILABLE ALL YEAR
Gorges du Verdon
Drive to Moustiers Sainte Marie. Since 1981, this village has been rated one of the most beautiful villages in France. We will see unique church walls, chapels, water, fountains, alliances of water and stone. We will have lunch there by the River in one of the very pleasant restaurants.
After lunch let’s go for a loop of the Gorges by car.
Welcome to the Grand Canyon du Verdon, a natural border between the Var and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. This huge gash that was sculpted by the gods is the result of great erosion work on the limestone plateaus of the Verdon in Provence. It is a unique place in France. The depth of the gorges is up to 700 meters, and the location, where the Alpine and Mediterranean climates meet, provides an extreme wealth of fauna and flora. Here, nature reigns supreme and surprisingly wild. You are at the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon.
Stops : Route des Crêtes where we can see the flight of vultures, Point Sublime with its terrific views to the canyon, Les Balcons de la Mescla where the 2 rivers Verdon and Artuby meet, the impressive bridge of l’ Artuby river and the castle of Aiguines from the XI or XII century to the XVIII. Overlooking the Lake St. Croix, the Castle Aiguines has a great panorama.
Water Color :
The green color is due to the fluorine of the Verdon and the micro-algae in it. It is probably the origin of its name, from the Latin viridum " green place ". The turquoise color of Lake St. Croix is due to clay deposits.
